EMDR & Trauma Therapy in
New Jersey
Sometimes the past doesn't feel like the past.
You may understand what happened to you and still find yourself reacting to situations in ways that feel difficult to control. Certain relationships, conflicts, memories, or experiences may trigger anxiety, shame, fear, emotional overwhelm, or the feeling that you're right back where you started.
At Vida Wellness & Counseling Services, we provide trauma-informed therapy and EMDR for adults throughout New Jersey who want to heal from painful experiences and understand how the past may still be affecting their present.
What Is EMDR Therapy?
Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR) is an evidence-based psychotherapy approach designed to help people process distressing memories and experiences.
Rather than relying only on talking about what happened, EMDR uses bilateral stimulation while you focus on aspects of a distressing experience. This process can help the brain reprocess memories so they become less emotionally overwhelming.
EMDR may be used to address trauma, PTSD, painful childhood experiences, negative beliefs about yourself, and other experiences that continue to create emotional distress.
Your therapist will work with you to determine whether EMDR is appropriate for your needs and help you prepare before trauma processing begins.
When Trauma Continues to Affect Your Life
Trauma isn't always one event. It can also develop through repeated experiences of feeling unsafe, unseen, neglected, rejected, or hurt—especially during childhood. Trauma therapy may help with:
Childhood abuse, neglect, or sexual trauma
PTSD or complex trauma
Shame, guilt, or low self-worth
Difficulty trusting others or boundaries
Anxiety or hypervigilance
Emotional triggers connected to the past
Unhealthy or repetitive relationship patterns
Healing doesn't mean forgetting what happened. It means helping the past have less control over how you feel and live today.
Healing From Childhood & Complex Trauma
When painful experiences happen repeatedly—particularly within important childhood relationships—they can influence how you see yourself, relationships, safety, and the world around you.
As an adult, you may recognize patterns such as:
“I'm never good enough.”
“I have to take care of everyone.”
“I can't trust anyone.”
“My needs don't matter.”
Trauma therapy can help you understand where these beliefs and patterns began, process the experiences connected to them, and develop a healthier relationship with yourself.
